I was gutted to learn of the death in Sydney last week of former Severed Heads member Stephen Jones.
Severed Heads was my gateway drug to Volition Records.
At the age of 18 I caught their Rock Arena performance on ABC TV here in Australia, and my mind was completely blown by music like nothing I’d heard before, accompanied by Stephen’s and Tom’s incredible visuals.
Later, the first Volition release I bought was the vinyl 12″ single of “Hot With Fleas”.
Since starting this project I’m still learning about Severed Heads, and although I knew little about Stephen I do know we’ve lost a genius. Among his many achievements and endeavours he invented a video synthesiser!
If you haven’t seen the Rock Arena special you can watch it on YouTube, and from there I suggest a deep dive into the world of Severed Heads’ music videos.
Love and condolences to Stephen’s family, and to all who loved or appreciated him and his art.
Be kind and look out for each other. Much love, Jody
